Nigeria partners with UNESCO and PAU to strengthen teacher education using mobile devices The Federal Government has inaugurated a mobile learning programme in collaboration with the UNESCO International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa (UNESCO-IICBA) and the Pan African University (PAU), to strengthen teacher development with digital technologies.
The three-day Master Training Programme which commenced in Abuja on July 21, titled “Empowering Female Teachers and School Leaders through Integrating Mobile-based Learning in the Pan-African Virtual and Electronic University (PAVEU) Initiative” would last until July 23. Funded by the Government of Japan, the programme is being carried out in Algeria, Cameroon, Kenya, Nigeria and South Sudan.

The programme seeks to increase access to Continuous Professional Development, with a focus on female teachers and school leaders, using mobile technologies to deliver education flexibly and accessibly.
The Federal Ministry of Education says the programme utilises mobile devices to bridge barriers of distance, time, and infrastructural constraints which often impede teachers from participating in professional development programmes.

The training platform is engineered to be a low-data and offline friendly learning platform that will make teachers have access to learning irrespective of their connection to the internet.
According to the ministry, the initiative complements Nigeria’s efforts at building the capacity of her teachers via digital innovation, adding that the importance of continuous professional development cannot be over emphasised for effective teaching and improved learning.

Officials expressed the belief that the deployment of modern digital technologies will also equip teachers with requisite skills that will ensure they build a strong, Inclusive, and future-ready education system capable of meeting learners’ needs across the nation.
