The West African Examinations Council has refused to publish result cards for 167,486 candidates who had appeared for the Computer Based West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) 2026 following allegations that they engaged in malpractice.
Dr. Amos Dangut, the Officer in Charge of WAEC National Office posted the results are now withheld, adding that it accounts for 8.59% of 1,950,726 candidates who wrote the examination in Nigeria, Benin Republic, Côte d’Ivoire and Equatorial Guinea.

Meanwhile the WAEC notes investigations into the alleged malpractice were ongoing, with a promise that affected candidates will get fair hearing before final decisions are drawn conformant to its Council’s rules. Any serious breaches of regulations that came to light from a case involving a candidate, a school and an examination official would be dealt with at the appropriate committees, said the examination body.
However, in spite of this, WAEC released the results of 1,834,695 candidates (94.05%) as fully processed and the results of 116,031 results (5.95%) are still being processed.

The Council also reported that 1,200,514 persons, who repeated the test, scored credits in such a minimum of five subjects, including the two core subjects English Language and Mathematics English that is required to be taken in admission into most tertiary institutions.
Many of the cases of malpractice were due to the illegal usage of mobile telephones at the examination halls and organised cheating by some schools and examination officers, Dr. Dangut said. He said any superviser or invigilator who was found to be involved in the process will face disciplines and sanctions from the relevant ministries of Education and other relevant authorities in the state.

The 2026 WASSCE exam took place from April 24 to June 19, with the second iteration of WAEC school exam commences in Nigeria using computer based tests.
Protecting the integrity of the exam process, the Council added that it put in place “strengthened arrangements for safeguarding the examination process”, such as serialising question papers and implementing digital marking systems.
