Drake, the Tommy Hilfiger hunk and Canadian rapper, pulled a Canadian fast-leg on the other side after putting $770,000 on the co- hosts to defeat South Africa after the biggest win in South Africa’s history came about when the hosts beat the Canadians 1-0 to qualify for the Round of 16 for the first time in their history.

Drake’s bet was on Stake, a popular online betting site, for his own country to win the regulation match. After the successful bet returned about $1.5 million, the winnings brought home about $770,000 profit after the Stephen Eustáquio stoppage-time goal. The rapper, who has millions of followers across social media, gave out specifics of the bet ahead of the game, joinig his other notable bets on sports.

Canada’s win was one of the greatest triumphs of the game of football in the country. Undefeated down the stretch, Eustáquio did not mess around after an underwhelming match against South Africa but hammered home the ball in the dying moments to make Jesse Marsch’s team advance to next week’s last 16, where they will keep a fantastic World Cup run going. The victory also helped to build Canada’s standing on the international football pitch as they advanced for the first time in tournament history to the next stage after finishing third in their group.

As Aubrey Drake Graham, Drake’s real name, he’s posted one of several high-profile betting wins in recent years in the successful wager. The Grammy-winning musician is now an icon of sports betting, placing bets alongside Stake on football, basketball, mixed martial arts, boxing and American football on their regular basis.

However, his record on the pitch has been a mixed bag. The man who backed the Kansas City Chiefs to become Super Bowl LVII champions has celebrated his successes by correctly picking a number of big boxing and NBA matches, and has wagered on Jon Jones to defeat previous UFC champion Ciryl Gane at UFC 285.

He’s also had his share of high-profile losses, though—including having his fighters Israel Adesanya, Jorge Masvidal, and a bunch of football teams and NBA team fat fingered by teammate Gilbert Burns and being mocked as falling “short” of victory, as Drake fans call it—an internet phenomenon for the rapper that saw teams and athletes losing games allegedly because of the rapper’s association.

As for the rumours about his wagers, Drake has constantly shot down the rumors and the rumoured “curse,” citing numerous examples where he has been right. Indeed the World Cup result Sunday reinforced that statement – and was well compensated for in Canada.

Drake’s long history with Canadian sports is also eminently evident in the latest winning pull, as well as a diversity of other areas. He’s played an active role globally for the Toronto Raptors, making appearances at key sporting events and helping to bring Canadian athletes and teams into the world.

The successful prediction has landed Drake yet another talking point about the remarkable World Cup run of the co-hosts, the legendary football history and one of Canada’s most recognisable celebrity football bettors.
