15 Killed in Fresh Benue Herdsmen Attack

No fewer than 15 people were said to have died in coordinated attacks carried out by suspected armed herdsmen on communities in the Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State on Sunday, further raising fresh anxieties over increasing insecurity in Nigeria’s North-Central axis.

Sources within the affected areas revealed that the attackers stormed at least three communities in the local government, firing sporadically at residents and triggering mass exodus.

Many victims were said to have sustained gunshots, as they scampered for their lives from their burning houses and looted property.

An exact figure of injured victims was not available as at the time of filing this report.

Panicked residents were seen fleeing their homes with what they could carry and urged security agencies to intervene in order to stop the senseless killing of innocent souls and displacement of families within Benue communities.

Security agents have been dispatched to the affected areas to investigate and ensure the recovery of the perpetrators and also to ensure there is no further loss of lives.

As at the time of reporting this story, an official statement had yet to be issued on the number of casualties involved.

This attack in Otukpo followed a series of attacks attributed to suspected herders, which have caused deaths and massive displacements and loss of economic activities in some parts of the state.
