Soldiers from the Nigerian Army have managed to repulse an attack on a community in Borno State by a group of presumed fighters belonging to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). In the course of their defence, they discovered a camcorder containing information said to contain the involvement of foreign national and local collaborators in terrorist group activities.

Military sources indicate that troops encountered the fighters while they were attempting to launch an attack on a community, and engaged them in an exchange of fire, repelling the attackers who later fled leaving a collection of items behind.

Included in the discarded items was a camcorder which, along with other items of value, such as arms and ammunition, was reportedly found amongst weapons and communication equipment thought to be used in attacks.

An initial review of the contents of the camcorder, as sources revealed, contained images of seven foreign nationals thought to have participated in terrorist activities along with ISWAP militants and local accomplices alleged to have supplied both logistical and intelligence support to the insurgent group.

The intelligence data that could be retrieved from the camcorder is expected to further enhance security forces efforts aimed at cracking down on terrorist organizations operating around the Lake Chad region and neighboring communities. Experts are optimistic the retrieved intelligence could potentially aid in identifying cross-border activities, recruitment patterns, and supply routes used by insurgent groups.

Military leadership believes that their successful defence of the community reinforces the effectiveness of intelligence-led operations and their capability in intercepting terrorist groups and thwarting attacks prior to completion.

The latest endeavor by the military contributes to on-going counter-insurgency efforts in the North East of Nigeria, with security forces having intensified offensive military operations against camps identified as belonging to Boko Haram and ISWAP.

Their efforts have also been targeted at combating supply routes, financial support mechanisms, and informants for the groups.

Recovered communications devices, weaponry, and explosives that could be of value in intelligence operations have recently been documented by the military.

Security specialists emphasize the transnational element of the insurgency as being evidenced by the suspected foreign fighters, calling for greater regional coordination between the Multinational Joint Task Force member states in countering cross-border terrorism.
