Toyota Motor Corp’s vehicle sales tumbled in May 2026, eking out a fourth straight monthly drop despite robust sales growth at home in Japan, illustrating how sluggish demand in China, the United States and the Middle East is rocking the world’s largest automaker.

Jaguar’s global sales declined 7.2% from a year ago to 834,279 vehicles, and sales overseas fell 9.6%, the Japanese carmaker announced. However, this decrease was somewhat tempered by an 11.1% rise in domestic sales, particularly in Japan, where models such as the bZ4X electric SUV and RAV4 performed well. Toyota’s take in the figures is the combined accounts of the Lexus brand.

Despite strong competition from its domestic electric vehicle manufacturers and tough market conditions, sales of the Toyota brand continued to drop in China, a market which continues to be the company’s weakest among the major markets.

Sales declined 38.6% in the Middle East, as weak demand from consumers in the Middle East took hold following months of instability in the region and fuel price increases. Meanwhile, sales in Toyota’s largest market, the United States, dropped 0.6%, which further dampened the company’s spirits in terms of global sales.

This post-recession expansion of the economy also benefited output. Toyota’s total vehicle output in May was down 5.5 percent worldwide from a year earlier as manufacturing waned 3.8 percent in the United States and 13.3 percent on the rest of the planet, though higher levels in Japan obscured the losses, the company said.

The new numbers are in a concerning trend for the automaker. The company’s sales are now down four months in a row from the year following their February, March and April declines, and China and the Middle East countries are always the weak points. The company also stated earlier this year that deliveries were being affected by the change in the range to the new-generation RAV4 and geopolitical factors in the Middle East logistics.

Toyota has seen its turnover diminished lately, but in some markets, Toyota hybrid sales are still picking up.

But with markets growing more competitive in China, changing consumer tastes and geopolitical risks and supply chain pressures, analysts are predicting it will face significant hurdles in trying to hold back global sales growth in the next several months.
