Spain is going to the round of 16. A composed performance from La Roja defeated a gritty Austrian team in their Group B meeting in Charlotte, to reach the knockout stage, where they’ll face the winner of the clash between Croatia and Portugal in Dallas on 6 July.

Spain, a winner at the 2010 finals in South Africa, dominate possession and were rarely bothered, particularly defensively by an Austrian outfit who had proved themselves as an efficient, tactically astute and well-organised opposition.

Head coach Luis de la Fuente commended the organisation and tactical awareness shown by his side to overcome the disciplined approach of Austria.

His side commanded play, with possession firmly in their control, and as such had by far the most accurate shooting. As such, Spain can look forward to a clash with the winners of Croatia v Portugal in Dallas, likely to be the outstanding match of the round of 16.

Austria were knocked out in their first World Cup since 1998 and coach Ralf Rangnick’s side are certainly to be congratulated on their performances at this event which they, and not top two of the group, was the second side to advance from the Group of death, following strong performances from both Spain and their opponents.

The victory ensured Spain remain in the hunt for a second World Cup title as they head to Dallas next weekend with confidence.
