The Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN), said he would perform his duties in the commission professionally and transparently and described his appointment to the post as a “call to service.”
Prof. Amupitan gave the pledge at the INEC headquarters on Wednesday during a courtesy call on him by members of the Okun Development Association (ODA), led by its President-General, Amb. Akenson Rotimi.
Speaking for the delegation, Rotimi congratulated the INEC chairman and stated that his appointment was well deserved due to his integrity, expertise and eminent public service and that it made Okun proud.

He averred that Amupitan would do well in taking Nigeria’s electoral system to greater heights and prayed for and guaranteed support for the chairman from the association.
In his reply, Prof. Amupitan thanked the delegation for their congratulatory visit and goodwill messages and explained that administrative duties within his office had kept him back from meeting them at a much earlier opportunity or visiting his home state since his appointment.

He added that running the electoral system in Nigeria was a demanding responsibility in public service, requiring integrity and impartiality and that the Commission could not compromise in any way on its constitutional duties toward conducting fair elections and with unbiased mind.
Prof. Amupitan also lamented the contemporary menace of misinformation and disinformation on the internet, but assure that INEC is steadfast in its commitment to ensure that fair and appropriate election processes would be in place always as prescribed by the constitution and Electoral Act.
