Tinubu Urges Governors to Prioritise Essential Infrastructure Over Flyovers

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu asked state governors to make sure that increased revenues are deployed for activities that bring direct benefits to the people while saying that they should not waste resources on what he calls “unnecessary” flyovers when there are pressing infrastructure deficits and public service needs that the average citizen desperately requires.

The President gave the charge when he spoke about how his government’s economic and fiscal reforms have made for “larger funding to states” and increased their financial capability, saying that several states are now getting larger allocations monthly, and states no longer need to borrowed funds to clear salaries and to undertake development projects.

Tinubu stated that he expected state governors to use the available funds for infrastructure projects which will have positive impacts for the economy at large or for the average citizen such as “roads that enhance connectivity between cities and between rural and urban centers; healthcare, education, water supply and others that drive growth and uplift living standards”, saying that many states have been making colossal investments in “urban flyovers and interchange projects”.

The stance of President Tinubu is different from that of the Federal Government, which insists that its on-going investment in strategically important highways, aimed at enhancing national connectivity, increasing trade and achieving economic integration and a key component of the Renewed Hope Agenda is a good long-term investment for economic growth and prosperity.

President Tinubu has always been quoted as being confident that the country’s economic reform agenda, the scrapping of the fuel subsidy regime and the revenue allocation change have strengthened the financial position of states to the extent that governors are “now taking care of salaries and meeting up with debt repayment obligations and are developing their states without significant borrowing”.
