The Chief Imam of Lekki Central Mosque, Sheikh Ridwan Jamiu, has implored the Federal Government to re-introduce capital punishment on perpetrators of kidnapping and banditry.
According to him, more stringent sanctions are required to tackle the escalating insecurity crisis in Nigeria. The cleric made this known at a public discourse session held in the mosque’s premises.
He condemned the frequent occurrences of kidnapping and violent incursions in many parts of the nation and strongly stated that convicts involved in such crimes should neither be pardoned nor enrolled in rehabilitation schemes.

This would, he posited, dilute justice and encourage criminal activities. The clergyman stressed that the sanctity of human lives outweighs any form of soft measures for offenders of violence.
Sheikh Jamiu therefore advised the government to fortify the justice delivery mechanism and ensure a swift application of laws on abduction and banditry.
The statement follows Nigeria’s struggles with an unending wave of insecurity, characterized by kidnap-for- ransom and armed robberies targeting vulnerable citizens.
