Fifty members of the European parliament have sent an appeal to FIFA asking the world football body to investigate its President Gianni Infantino after he was allegedly nominated US President Donald Trump for a peace award. They claim that this action would tarnish FIFA’s neutral political status.
The members questioned whether Infantino was in violation of FIFA’s Code of Ethics and whether the move was aligned with the federation’s principles on neutrality, integrity and independence.

The European parliament members stated that the action could tarnish FIFA’s reputation as it would make people believe that FIFA or Infantino had adopted a political position on a global issue.
FIFA has not yet responded to the request.
The development follows ongoing major FIFA competitions, whilst the body’s leadership is being investigated over ethical violations.
