Legal representatives for Finnish-Nigerian separatist, Simon Ekpa, who has been charged with terrorism-related offenses in Finland, have said they are ready for court proceedings to resume on 10 August.
Ekpa is currently in custody in Finland since his arrest in November 2024, and he faces charges that include membership of a terrorist group, incitement to commit a crime for terrorist purposes, and aggravated tax fraud.
Prosecutors claim that while in Finland, Ekpa launched an online campaign encouraging violence as part of the Igbo secession movement and conflict in southeastern Nigeria. Ekpa denies the terrorism charges.

Sources from his defence team confirmed that readiness for the trial has been finalized with the trial expected to witness prosecutors continue presenting evidence while they, his defence lawyers, mount challenges to the charges against him.
The proceedings have received considerable interest from both Nigerian and Finnish citizens, with a special focus on possible implications for cross-border prosecution of suspected terrorism offenses committed through digital channels. Security agencies in Nigeria worked with Finnish authorities in the investigation process although the trial has been conducted in the Finnish jurisdiction.

Ekpa, a citizen of Finland and Nigeria, rose to prominence following his claims of leadership to a faction promoting the independence of southeastern Nigeria. Nigerian security agents have continued to claim that he inspires violence through his calls for boycotts and broadcasts, allegations Ekpa has persistently denied.
