The nomination of former Oklahoma State Trooper and U.S. Marine Lance Schroyer to be the next Director of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), ends President Donald Trump’s search for a law enforcement official to lead his administration in being tough on immigration.
On his Truth Social app, Trump posted that Schroyer is a “patriot who has served in law enforcement for over 29 years, possesses extensive operational experience, and has been involved with immigration enforcement programs.”
The president urged the U.S Senate to approve his nomination promptly, saying Schroyer has the experience necessary to help improve undocumented migrants’ detention and deportation efforts should they be accused of committing a crime.

Prior to his time with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Schroyer was an Oklahoma State Trooper and was previously employed in immigration enforcement through a U.S. government program known as 287(g) which provides specially trained and certified state/ local law enforcement agencies with the means to assist in the performance of federal immigration functions under the close supervision of ICE.
His training in interagency operations and conveying legislation throughout the state qualifies him well to helm the agency, supporters say.
If true, Schroyer will be the first Senate confirmed ICE director since 2017. The agency has exercised the position of acting director almost ten years, most recently by Todd Lyons who stepped down earlier this year to be followed by David Venturella.

The nomination occurs because immigration is one of the key issues of Trump’s Presidency. As the administration has returned to office, the administration has bid to detain more immigrants, and has stepped up deportation efforts, citing the need for tougher action to succeed in maintaining the integrity of the border, while also ensuring public safety.
But civil rights groups have challenged such practices, voicing anxieties about detention standards, proceeding by legal standards, and conditions at migrant facilities. Over 50 people in ICE custody have died since Trump’s renewed immigration crackdown, raising increased questions about its operations, Reuters reported.

Now Schroyer’s nomination will be heard by the U.S. Senate, where legislators will likely review his immigration policies, vision of leading one of the nation’s most-watched federal agencies and law enforcement history.
