Ugandan Football Mourns Captain Abubaker Lawal After Fatal Gang Attack

The sporting community in Uganda is grieving due to the killing of one of the country’s football players – the captain of Uganda’s beach soccer team, Abubaker Lawal, who was shot to death by authorities who alleged a gang of criminal elements attacked him while he was on patrol in Kampala, the capital city.

It was reported that Lawal was attacked when he was making a homecoming trip as also played club football for Vipers SC. Investigators suspect that the attack was in connection with a robbery, as the suspects fled the scene with his fatal wounds, police said. Efforts were made to save his life but he died due to severe injuries.

Uganda Police are also investigating the case for homicide, and have reportedly identified several suspects connected to the case, adding that security agencies are now ramping up their efforts to catch the culprits. Seeing as someone may have information to help the investigation, authorities have reached out to the general public to include them.

Football authorities and colleagues and supporters have reacted with condemnatory comments due to the killing, alleging that Lawal was an exceptional leader and role model. The national football federation and his club honored and appreciated his contribution to Ugandan football, lauding his switch and discipline, and his leadership.

Complainants have also called for greater action to be taken against the spate of violent offences in Kampala, citing the rise in gang-related attacks among the many shortcomings. The need to step up measures for the prevention of violent crimes has also been called on by supporters and sports officials, citing the rampant increase in attacks among those groups affiliated to street gangs.

Throughout social media, other players, coaches and fans remembered Lawal for his passion for the sport and his contribution in the promotion of the game of beach soccer in Uganda.

Funeral services are expected to be held and the federation has plans to say their final farewells to the late captain in the days ahead.
