NERC agrees with power minister over more coordination between federal, state entities in electricity delivery – The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) agrees with Power Minister Joseph Tegbe on need for better cooperation between federal and state institutions in electricity supply.
NERC reiterates that what matters to Nigerians is stable supply of power. According to the Chairman of the regulatory commission, Dr Musiliu Oseni, stakeholders need to cooperate closely as Nigeria moves to a decentralised electricity market under the Electricity Act 2023.

This was made known at a power sector workshop on “Legal, Policy and Regulatory Harmonisation between Federal and State Institutions on the Decentralisation of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI)” in Abuja where regulators and policy makers deliberated on the challenges of changing governance paradigms in the sector.
“Instead of rivalries between regulatory institutions, regulators should cooperate as the ultimate concern for consumers is stable supply of electricity, not who has jurisdiction over what.” Oseni proposed that the Federal Ministry of Power and state commissioners should meet more often on policy matters, potentially via a restructured National Council on Power (NACOP), to enhance policy coherence as Nigeria transitions.

He assured that NERC was open to all ideas that will make Nigeria’s electricity supply more reliable. Minister of Power, Mr Joseph Tegbe, stated that there was the need for harmonization of activities in the power sector for optimal coordination between federal and state regulators and operators.
Reliable supply of electricity, according to him, remains a potent driver of economic growth and national development.
The workshop was put together to further deepen collaboration among federal and state regulatory and policy makers following the decentralization of Nigeria’s electricity industry.
