The President instructs EFCC to void the court order to suspend Osun government accounts. President TINUBU instructs EFCC to overturn court order on freezing of Osun government account.
I am to note that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) obtained a court order on 5th August, 2026 which amounted to the freezing of the Osun State Government’s bank accounts.
I have to say, I am embarrassed on the part of the EFCC and not because they went against their mandate pursuant to a Court order, but because the timing of their action. This is the reason, because when any action is taken by any institution of State, particularly from the Federal level, even if there was never any instance where I had prior knowledge of the action, it is always attributed to me, as President.

I have consistently argued since coming into office that anti-corruption and law enforcement agencies have to be able to do their jobs without fear or favour or political pressure so as to assure that they are doing their jobs as assigned. For this reason, I have deliberately refrained from directing or interfering in its operational activities of the EFCC or any other investigative/prosecutor agency with the firm conviction that strong democratic institutions within the confines of law is indispensable for good governance and rule of law in a democratic system.
I wish to assure the populace that as President I will not allow institutions of State to be inhibited in carrying out their deliberate functions due to the absence of authorization. As President, I will allow institutions of State to act as they deem fit in the service of good governance regardless of whether they have approval or not.

After all that is why institutions are established with well defined powers by law! Though I have not been fully informed of all the things that motivated EFCC in approaching the courts to grant the said order for the freezing of the account of the Osun State Government, I do not at all imagine that the timing of the action of the EFCC is propitious to myriads of reasons and I feel obliged to intervene.
Osun State is just few days away from election for governor. Hence, nothing must be done to give sense of manipulation by the EFCC or for that matter any other agency of the federal government into the electoral process.

Given the above premise, I have a responsibility to give a direction on this question in keeping with the general public interest to maintain public confidence and the integrity, trustworthiness and fairness of the democratic tradition.
Hence, I have instructed the EFCC urgently to go to court to set aside the order and cancel out any action it may have taken against the Osun State Government on the issue.
