Bigger than usual number involving over 38,800 persons in Severe Flooding situation in Ghana due to prolonged period of heavy rainfall, where 7,761 households were displaced including 7,761 persons reported dead and still unlocated in the flood inundated areas by the Flood Relief Authority, say authorities.
Ghana’s Interior Minister, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, told Parliament that the devastating floods across some parts of the country had left several communities flooded and resulted in the displacement of thousands of people and the destruction of property and infrastructure.
A government search and rescue team is continuing its probe into the extent of the disaster while carrying out the search.

The emergency locators are very busy as they leave no stone unturned to trace down missing persons and extend the helping hand to the impacted families, mentioned Muntaka. He stated that temporary shelters have been set up for internally displaced people and humanitarian aid, including medical supplies, food, and non-food items, is being distributed to the worst-affected communities.
The floods came after days of heavy rain leading to rivers and drainage systems flooding and homes, roads and farmlands being flooded. Communication is now cut and there is damage to public infrastructure in several isolated communities; transportation significantly affected.
The humanitarian outlook remained alarming, as the extended rain were expected to further endanger these hard-hit communities, with a call by the authorities for people to move to safer places and take heed of order for evacuation by the agencies in charge of dealing with natural disasters.
Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), security outfits and local responders have stepped up disaster response and engineers are on the ground assessing roads and bridges to ease access to Hisle town.

Rapid urbanisation, inadequate drainage, and climate change impacts also are blamed with floods often occurring in Ghana in the wet season, causing seasonal disasters.
The Government has promised to continue supporting affected communities in the ongoing essence, with a focus on recovery and rebuilding.
