President Donald Trump has paid $5.6 million in settlement to writer E. Jean Carroll ending the money part of a civil award from a jury that ruled in one of two high profile lawsuits that he sexually assaulted her and defamed her.
The payment comes after a federal jury in Manhattan ruled in 2023 that he was liable for $5 million in damages to Carroll – plus interest and the payment which was in an escrow account at a court was finally made available after Trump failed to persuade the Supreme Court to take his case.

Trump paid out money as Carroll sued under New York’s Adult Survivors Act and accused him of sexual assault in a New York department store in the mid-1990s as well as a second instance of defamation when Trump denied it.
The Manhattan jury, by civil – but not criminal – standards – of evidence found he was liable for sexual abuse, not rape, and defamation by Trump whom said that there never was a sexual assault of the journalist as well as that this was politically-motivated litigation against him.

Trump is fighting another judgment from January, in which a federal jury has awarded another $83.3 million in damages to Carroll for subsequent defaming statements he has made since a prior judgment was issued.
Carroll’s lawyer, has stated the payment had been made and a spokesperson for the president did not comment.
