Return and Rebuild Our Health Sector, Tinubu Appeals to Nigeria Doctors Abroad Nigerians live there, here – ‘there is nowhere like home,’ he said as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, wooed Nigerian medical and healthcare professionals living abroad to return to their roots in order to help revitalise the country’s health sector “There is no other country like one’s home, as no one is above their own.”

Tinubu announced the new drive during the launch of the Diaspora Health Impact Initiative (DHII) 2026, an effort by Federal Government to gain the collaboration of the over 50,000 Nigerian medical practitioners ( doctors) and thousands of Nigerian health workers in the diaspora.

It focused on the promotion of specialists medical outreach, specialist clinical mentorship, research collaboration, and knowledge sharing in training nurses and technicians; and general strengthening of the health workforce in any part of world without the necessarily having to come and take up permanent residence permanently in the Country.

According to Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM),’ the launch of DHII 2026 is a milestone, transforming skills in the diaspora to concrete gains in our health sector through such a well-structured approach’, assuring them that ‘the federal government sees it as one of the avenues to engage and deploy the expertise of Nigerian diasporans for the development of the nation.’

With DHII, more specialized health services in Nigeria will become accessible, medical training in the country and across some specific health Institutions will improved through clinical mentorship, researchers at medical Institutions in Nigeria will be more active, and Federal Government’s reform strategy is well-supported by this project connect its health systems and specialists abroad.
