In an intensified move to clean the Augean stables of the Nigerian Police, the Police Service Commission (PSC) has dismissed four senior police officers while 31 other officers got varying sanctions.
The PSC, according to a statement by its spokesperson Mr. Ikechukwu Isiekwu, took the decisions following its review of petitions/cases bordering on gross misconduct, abuse of power, neglect of duty, insubordination and other infractions against discipline and standards of practice by police officers.

The PSC added that after consideration of investigation reports and recommendations emanating through the Commission’s disciplinary committees, it considered four cases that warrant dismissal from service, which were subsequently effected.
The others were given different degrees of sanctions like demotions, reprimands and cautions.“
These measures, according to the Commission, were in demonstration of its resolve to sanitize the Nigeria Police Force and ensure that discipline, integrity and accountability remain at the core of its operations, moreso, because the officers charged with the maintenance of law and order in the society must operate by the highest professional and ethical standards, “the statement said.

The Commission maintained that all cases of misconduct would be dealt with decisively irrespective of the rank or position of the officer and that transparency and due process have remained key elements of its disciplinary actions.“
The Commission used the occasion to again urge officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force to embrace professionalism, adherence to human rights and all operational guidelines.
Any act capable of tarnishing the image of the force will not be tolerated,” the PSC said.

It noted that the disciplinary actions were part of a sustained effort to reform and reposition the Nigerian Police Force through adequate monitoring, enforcement of discipline, instilment of high ethical standards and the overall improvement of performance and public perception.
