Experts disagree on how often you should be showering – but for many adults, that may be every other day or few times per week, as long as you stay clean and do things like wash your pits and feet frequently. “You’re not born to shower every day, that’s the key takeaway here,”
Dermatologists and other skin experts all agree there’s no one-size-fits-all schedule for showering, and that for many people, showering daily isn’t really all that beneficial.

“For many adults with limited activity levels in a moderate climate, two to three times per week can actually be fine – sometimes even every other day, if they maintain basic hygiene,” says board-certified dermatologist Shari Sperling, DO.
But some people have other, legitimate needs to shower on the daily: anyone who “ exercises regularly, has a physically demanding or messy job, lives in a hot/humid climate or sweat heavily. The problem with that: “Hot water and strong soaps can strip the skin’s natural oils, which is the primary defence mechanism that helps your skin to retain moisture.”

This process can lead to a damaged skin barrier, and can dry out and irritate the skin – even triggering flare-ups like eczema.
The experts advise taking shorter, lukewarm showers, opting for mild cleansers and applying a moisturizer after each session.
