Chinese AI startup DeepSeek has officially launched its V4 Pro model, stepping up competition with domestic rivals while expanding its workforce, computing infrastructure and fundraising efforts. (
The new model, V4-Pro-0813, is designed to improve AI-agent capabilities, allowing systems to handle more complex, multi-step tasks. It is available through DeepSeek’s API, mobile application and website.
The launch comes as DeepSeek seeks to regain momentum in China’s rapidly developing AI market, where it faces growing competition from companies including Moonshot AI, Zhipu AI and ByteDance.

DeepSeek is also significantly expanding its operations. The company plans to increase staffing across several divisions and is recruiting chip-design engineers as it works toward developing proprietary AI processors. The strategy could reduce its reliance on external suppliers such as Nvidia and Huawei.
The company is simultaneously seeking additional funding to finance the heavy computing and infrastructure requirements of frontier AI development. Reuters reported that DeepSeek recently raised $7.4 billion in its first external financing round and is preparing for another fundraising effort targeting a valuation of about $74 billion.

The V4 Pro release is also accompanied by a change in DeepSeek’s commercial strategy. The company has announced new peak and off-peak API pricing, with rates for its V4 models set to rise from August 17. Depending on the model, token type and usage period, the increases will range from 50% to 1,100%.
The moves illustrate the increasing cost of competing at the frontier of artificial intelligence. Beyond developing stronger models, DeepSeek is investing heavily in talent, data-centre capacity, computing infrastructure and specialised chips as Chinese technology companies compete for leadership in the domestic AI market.

The pricing changes underline the financial pressures facing AI developers as they attempt to balance rapidly growing demand with the substantial cost of operating advanced models.
China’s AI Race Gets More Competitive
DeepSeek’s latest moves show that competition in China’s AI industry is no longer focused solely on which company can release the most capable model.
Companies are increasingly competing across the entire AI ecosystem—from foundation models and autonomous agents to chips, computing infrastructure, talent and access to capital.

For DeepSeek, V4 Pro represents another attempt to strengthen its position in that race. Its simultaneous investment in proprietary chips, expanded staffing and large-scale computing capacity suggests the company is pursuing a longer-term strategy aimed at building greater technological independence.
The next phase of China’s AI competition may therefore be determined not only by model performance, but by which companies can secure the capital, computing power, specialised hardware and talent needed to sustain rapid innovation.
