ASUU lecturers at Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, Niger State, declared an indefinite strike on Monday over the non-implementation of key provisions of the 2025 agreement.
The Lapai branch announced the industrial action after an emergency congress and press conference at the university, following what the union described as unsuccessful engagements and appeals to resolve the dispute.
ASUU-IBBU Chairman, Galadima Bala, said the union was seeking full implementation of the agreement, which involves state governments and public universities.
Union Demands Action From Niger Government
Bala said several state-owned universities had already implemented the agreement, citing institutions in Bauchi, Gombe, Benue, Yobe, Osun, Ekiti and Kano states. He also said Nasarawa State University had commenced implementation.
The union warned that Niger State risked falling behind other states if the outstanding issues were not addressed.
ASUU also raised concerns about the movement of academic staff from universities where the agreement remains unimplemented, citing a claim that Kaduna State University had lost more than 200 lecturers. The university has disputed that figure.
Strike Continues Until Concrete Action
The union called on the Niger State Government to address its concerns and restore industrial harmony at IBB University.
ASUU said it remained open to meaningful dialogue and indicated that the strike could be suspended once the government demonstrated a clear commitment to implementing the outstanding provisions.
The development adds IBB University to the growing number of state-owned institutions where disputes over the implementation of the 2025 agreement have resulted in industrial action.
