President Bola Tinubu has appointed former Humanitarian Affairs Minister Betta Edu as Director of Women Mobilisation in his APC presidential campaign council for 2027.
Edu’s appointment returns her to a prominent political role more than two years after Tinubu suspended her from office amid controversy surrounding the handling of funds in the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.
The former minister was suspended in January 2024 after a controversy over a directive involving the transfer of public funds into a private account, prompting an investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, according to recent reports.
Edu Gets Women Mobilisation Role
Edu’s name appeared on the list of members of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council constituted for Tinubu’s re-election bid.
Her new assignment is to coordinate women’s mobilisation as the APC prepares for the 2027 presidential election.
The development has also drawn criticism from opposition figures, with the African Democratic Congress describing the APC campaign council as a “rehabilitation centre” for individuals facing unresolved corruption questions.
Investigation Status Remains Unresolved
Recent reporting by People Gazette said the EFCC confirmed that its investigation into Edu’s case was still ongoing when contacted for an update.
Premium Times also reported that Edu’s appointment had revived scrutiny of the circumstances surrounding her 2024 suspension and the unresolved investigation.
The appointment places Edu among senior figures assigned roles in Tinubu’s re-election campaign structure as political activity intensifies ahead of the 2027 election.
