Afrobeats star David Adeleke, aka Davido, asked the U.S. President, Donald Trump, and international community to be mindful about upcoming governorship election in Osun State, cautioning against any form of violence, intimidation and disruption of the electoral process.
Yet, in a social media statement directed at Trump, Dr. David said he was bringing to light issues related to the electoral process and the heightened disquiet in the state.
“There is some tension and there is an increasing risk of violence, intimidation and disruption of the democratic process,” said the singer, who also emphasized that Osun citizens have the right to exercise their fundamental law of democracy “freely, peacefully and without fear”.

Davido requested the international community, including the United States, to keep a close watch on events leading to the election and urged their African counterparts to safeguard lives of the voters and respect all the ballots cast.
His intervention comes amid growing political tensions in Osun where worried political parties ratchet-up their campaigning efforts before holding an election for the governorship office. In recent news reports, there has been mention of political violence and violence between party supporters, leading to mounting fears over the security of the electoral process.
The singer’s appeal further comes because other political and civic personalities have been calling for a peaceful election, emphasising on the voters’ right to vote freely without intimidation or interference.

Davido has been in the news for his membership family with Governor Ademola Adeleke, whose re-election bid is at the heart of the race, particularly. As such, his actions put his messages into the wider discourse on electoral security, and the turbulent political landscape of Osun.
Despite this, he did not say directly in the statement who he supported but appealed in the name of “the respect of voters and the integrity of the democratic process.

He also directly tagged Trump, which is a pattern being followed by Nigerian public figures as they raise concerns over electoral integrity and political violence to international actors.
But, this can’t be equated to foreign participation without electoral and security institutions playing their role in Nigeria. Basically, the job of conducting and securing the election remains that of the Independent National Electoral Commission, the police and other competent police agencies in line with the Nigerian laws.

The discussion on the Osun poll has already etched a struggle of enormous public interest on to the election day’s agenda, in addition to the questions of voter freedom, its security and confidence in ballot.
